2/19/99 - A brief look at current things
For some reason, last night I was thinking about how I got started in the creatures community, and how this web page was formed. I decided to take a look back, to the day it started.
I was reading a local computer magazine, "Current Technology." They had a review of what appeared to be something very interesting: An Artificial Life program called, "Creatures 2." After reading the review it sparked my interest. A computerized lifeform that could communicate with you, and can do things on it's own. I immediately ran down to the local software store and made the purchase.
Soon after playing around with it, I began to get more interested in what went on behind the scenes. I then started viewing the files associated with it in a hex editor. What was a shock to me was the fact that the .gen files seemed to be laid out in an easy to manipulate fashion. After a while, I began browsing the web for more information on Norn genetics. After learning enough about what everything meant, I had made a descision: As there was no genetics editor available yet for Creatures 2, I set out to make a gene editor for it. The first one was pretty rudimentary, it listed the gene's id's on one side, and the contents (as best as I could figure some of them out) on the other side of the screen. I wish I still had this little program, as I would love to place a screen shot of it to show you what it looked like. Soon after that, I decided to make a more friendly interface and release the program to the masses. GEL was born.
Durring all of this, I was becoming more and more involved in the alt.games.creatures newsgroup, and was reading it as often as I could. I had already discovered the Echo Gallery, at this time, but was not ready to post. As I made more progress with GEL, I learned some information I had never found before, like how the pigment bleeds worked, the meanings of the characters in the pose genes, and some other stuff.
Lately, I have become involved in JRChat and have finally met most of the people that owned the websites I respected most. Suprisingly, I have found the Creatures community one of the nicest groups on the internet and I'm anxious to see what will come next for Creatures 2, and am looking forward to being a part of this group for a long time.
